Process Leather / Wet Blue Leather

Process Leather / Wet blue leather is a semi-finished leather product that has undergone the tanning process but has not yet been dried, dyed, or finished. It gets its name from the bluish color imparted by the chromium salts used in tanning. This stage is crucial in the leather manufacturing process as it prepares the hide for further processing.

The Wet Blue Process

The transformation of raw hide into wet blue involves several essential steps:

  • Preparation: The raw hide is cleaned, trimmed, and prepared for tanning.

  • Tanning: Chromium salts are used to preserve the hide and provide it with the necessary strength and flexibility.

  • Neutralization: The pH level of the leather is adjusted to prepare it for subsequent processes.

  • Fat-liquoring: Oils and fats are added to improve the leather’s feel and flexibility
